Nagura is often translated as Dressing Stone and can be used for creating a slurry before sharpening, for cleaning swarf from a stone, or for smoothing a stone's surface. Final edges sharper than a razor and polished like a mirror. Natural Nagura stones are a soft chalk stone that is used with hard natural finishing stones that don't like to make mud on there own. Tomo-Nagura or "stone of stone" nagura are a chunk of the stone you are using. It isn’t easy to determine the grit grade of natural stones, but for this stone it should be about 3000. I never have used it other than to try it out. I used G-1 #8000 stone for lapping and final polishing of my plane blades. It came with a Nagura stone, which is invaluable in starting the slurry, as this stone is pretty hard and sleek. Suehiro's 1000 grit Nagura is a general purpose stone that can be used for any of these purposes. Using a harder stone with very abrasive slurry will make the most accurate edge. We use the Nagura instead of different stones that are softer and coarser. Soak Before Use. They average 4000 grit and should only be used on stones of that grit rating or less. You won't turn your 1000 grit stone into a 10,000, but you can use a high grit nagura to get as fine of a polish as possible from a given stone.
