Mods provide many improvements from UI aspects to AI performances, as well as for more features and elements (but those can often destabilise the game, with the ai not having acces to player only bonus, or simply not being able to handle them, ruining itself in the process and adding to the lags), My advice : wait until AI improvements happen, whether when the devs finnaly decide to fix it, or via the modding community.
