The u87 is way too expensive (should be like $2k imo) and the tlm is a really good looking mic and is very large and impressive on a mic stand. I have a 49, I like it but I would sell it in a heartbeat for a U87 ai or original. Look at the TLM 67 before the 49. I own both U87ai and a tlm 49...I hardly use the 87 for anything. It's weird how it sounds like a Neumann! I just like the sheen of the U87. Every time I see a picture of a Rode NT1A, I cringe. I own both, and (on my voice) I like the TLM 49 better. 87 was developed in the tube and tape era ...sound-wise, not sure it's that relevant anymore. But for those who want a recording tool rather than a collector’s item, Neumann has developed an elegant solution: The TLM 49 combines the sonic excellence of Neumann’s legendary U 47 and M 49 microphones with the convenience a… Hey there! It's got the world-class charisma a lot of folks are looking for in a studio mic. I prefer the U87ai personally, it has more clarity, I also strongly disagree that the TLM103 is a 'bad' mic, I personally prefer over the 87ai in many instances it has a warmer sound, there is no right and wrong, only what works for YOU at that time. if you have the gitas, pop for the U87. Also, that was the only source I tried it on, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I found the 49 and a2d give quite a 'modern' pop vocal sound. A vintage 87 is a great mic that will attract clients. The TLM49 works on very few voices, it does not have the large low end of the U87 or the transient response required for a really good singer. Thin and a bit harsh. Any of you using the 2:1 button for vocals on the api with the 49? Neumann TLM-103 vs U87 Review. I already got the TLM49 through an API A2D and it sounds amazing!!! War This is clearly not enough to base an opinion on. Tlm is smooth and buttery, but VERY clean- almost boring, while the u87 has that upfront transformer graininess that gives it a character. I agree the TLM 49 is a special mic for sure, has quite the "finished" sound. +1 for the TLM 49 into the A2D, sounds awesome. Just a friendly reminder that political discussion, (including "offhand" and 'sideways' commenting) is. BTW, which mic did you end up getting? I can't speak to the vintage U87, but I chose the TLM49 over the u87ai. Much warmer. The "warmer" options *are* there in the shape of mics like the Neumann TLM 67 and TLM 49. Regardless, I just love how this capsule kills sibilance. If I could only keep 1 of them, it would be the U87ai no question but having both is great since generally one will work well on a source if the other doesn't. Tlm is smooth and buttery, but VERY clean- almost boring, while the u87 has that upfront transformer graininess that gives it a character. May sound crazy but that’s what I use and it works well. I usually blend with a Mojave MA300 tube condenser and/or an AEA N22 (cause that’s the only ribbon I own) for vocals. For what it's worth, I'd rather have two TLM102s than a single TLM49, just stay the hell away from the TLM103 as that is a truly awful sounding mic.
